Here’s an excerpt from Potter’s nomination letter:
“The patient was admitted after a motorcycle accident. He and his family were from Mississippi. The patient didn’t have health insurance and a lengthy hospital stay had been a strain on him and his family. Not to mention the emotional strain of being away from home and her children. One particular evening, Daina, realizing the stress the family was under, made a home-made dinner of chicken and dumplings and apple pie. The family was extremely appreciative of the love shown by this nurse. This is only one example of the ways this nurse goes above and beyond to care for the patients in her unit.”
The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this national award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.
